Background of the Study

The banking sector is known for its demanding work schedules, with employees often working long hours to meet targets, attend to customers, and handle financial transactions. Prolonged working hours contribute to stress, fatigue, and mental exhaustion, which can affect job performance and overall well-being (Oladipo & Musa, 2024).

In Kogi State, many bank employees work beyond standard hours due to increased workloads, pressure to meet financial goals, and the digitalization of banking services, which requires extended customer service. Studies suggest that excessive work hours are linked to high stress levels, leading to burnout, anxiety, and poor job satisfaction (Okonkwo et al., 2023). However, limited research has been conducted on how long working hours impact the mental health of bank employees in Kogi State. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between long working hours and stress levels among bank employees.

Statement of the Problem

Bank employees in Kogi State often work long hours, leading to increased stress and potential health risks. Many experience high-pressure work environments with little time for rest or personal activities, affecting their mental and physical health. Despite these concerns, research on the direct impact of long working hours on bank employees’ stress levels remains insufficient. This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the effects of extended work hours on stress among bank employees.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the stress levels of bank employees working long hours in Kogi State.

  2. To examine the impact of long working hours on employees’ mental and physical health.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving work-life balance in the banking sector.

Research Questions

  1. How do long working hours affect the stress levels of bank employees in Kogi State?

  2. What are the mental and physical health effects of prolonged work hours among bank employees?

  3. What measures can be taken to improve work-life balance for bank employees?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Long working hours significantly increase stress levels among bank employees.

  2. Bank employees who work extended hours are more likely to experience mental health issues.

  3. Reducing work hours and implementing flexible schedules will improve employees’ well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on bank employees in various financial institutions in Kogi State, assessing their work schedules and stress levels. Limitations may include reluctance of employees to disclose stress-related issues due to fear of job insecurity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Occupational Stress: Psychological strain resulting from excessive work demands.
